Starting solids should be exciting—but questions about readiness, choking, allergens, baby-led weaning, purées, and nutrition can make those first bites feel surprisingly high stakes. Join Kary Rappaport of Solid Starts and Dr. Whitney Casares, moderated by pediatric dietitian Sari Imberman, for a practical, evidence-based guide to starting solids with confidence. We’ll cover what to serve, how to serve it safely, what your baby actually needs to eat, and how to build a positive foundation around food from the very beginning.

About this event:
Starting solids is an exciting milestone—but between baby-led weaning, purées, allergens, choking fears, first foods, portion sizes, and figuring out whether your baby is even ready, it can quickly become overwhelming.
Join us for Starting Solids 101: What Every Parent Needs to Know, a practical, evidence-based conversation designed to give parents the confidence to navigate baby’s first bites and beyond.
Moderated by Sari Imberman, MS, RDN, pediatric dietitian and Founder of Fun with Food, this conversation brings together Kary Rappaport, OTR/L, MS, SCFES, IBCLC, Executive Director & Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Specialist at Solid Starts, and Dr. Whitney Casares, board-certified pediatrician, author, Founder & CEO of Modern Mommy Doc, and BabyCenter contributor. Sari specializes in starting solids, picky eating, and happier family mealtimes, while Kary brings more than 20 years of clinical experience supporting infant and toddler feeding.
Together, we’ll cover how to know when your baby is ready, what and how to serve, baby-led weaning versus purées, gagging versus choking, allergen introduction, nutrition, and what parents can stop worrying about. Most importantly, you’ll leave feeling equipped to make starting solids a safe, positive, and enjoyable experience for both you and your baby.
Together, we’ll discuss:
- How to know when your baby is developmentally ready for solids
- What age to start—and why readiness matters
- Baby-led weaning, purées, or a combination of both
- What makes a great first food
- How to safely prepare and serve foods for babies
- Gagging vs. choking and how to feel more confident about safety
- When and how to introduce common allergens
- How much babies actually need to eat
- Milk feeds versus solids during the first year
- Building chewing, self-feeding, and oral motor skills
- What to do when your baby refuses food
- Setting the foundation for a positive relationship with food from the very beginning
