The State of Working Parenthood: What Actually Helps (and How to Get It).

About this event:

Working parenthood has never come with a simple formula. Parents are told to find balance, set boundaries, ask for flexibility, build a village, protect their careers, be present with their kids—and somehow make all of those things happen at the same time.

But what actually makes working parenthood work?

Join us for The State of Working Parenthood: What Actually Helps (and How to Get It), an honest, practical conversation about what parents really need to build careers and families without feeling like they’re constantly failing at one or the other. We’ll look beyond the vague advice to talk about the supports that genuinely make a difference—from workplace flexibility, leave and childcare to career pauses, division of labor, boundaries, and the emotional realities of being pulled between work and home.

Moderated by Tracy Cho, CEO of Tinybeans, this conversation brings together Lauren Smith Brody, Founder of The Fifth Trimester; Erica Komisar, LCSW, psychoanalyst, parent guidance expert and author; Neha Ruch, Founder of The Power Pause; and Jeanelle Teves, Chief Commercial Officer of Bugaboo, executive, speaker and working parent. Together, they’ll explore working parenthood from different perspectives—including staying in, stepping back, returning, leading, caregiving, and creating a version of work and family life that actually fits.

Together, we’ll discuss:

  • Why working parenthood still feels so hard
  • The workplace supports that actually make a difference
  • Flexibility—and what meaningful flexibility really looks like
  • How parents can advocate for what they need at work
  • Career pauses, downshifts, and non-linear career paths
  • Returning to work after leave or a longer career pause
  • Childcare, caregiving, and the infrastructure families rely on
  • How couples can think about whose career takes priority—and when
  • The emotional cost of constantly switching between work and parenting
  • Guilt, ambition, identity, and redefining success after children
  • Boundaries that actually work in real life
  • What employers and managers often get wrong about working parents
  • How to know when your current setup simply isn’t working anymore
  • What parents can change themselves—and what requires bigger structural change

There may never be a perfect balance between work and family. But there are supports, systems, conversations, and choices that can make it significantly better. Parents will leave with practical ways to advocate for what they need—and permission to define a successful working-parent life on their own terms.
