About this event:
“He knows the word, he just won’t say it.” “She can say it when she wants to.” “I’ve heard him say it before, so I know he can do it.” If any of these thoughts sound familiar, you’re not alone.
In this parent workshop, pediatric speech-language pathologist Chelsey Kotler will unpack why a child may be able to say a word, sound, or phrase sometimes, but struggle to use it consistently. You’ll learn about the important difference between having a communication skill and being able to access that skill in the moment.
Chelsey will explore how language development, speech production, motor planning, regulation, context, and communication demands can all affect what children are able to say and when. She’ll also help parents better understand what inconsistent speech and language might be communicating about a child’s needs.
You’ll leave with a clearer picture of what to watch for, ways to better understand your child’s communication patterns, and guidance on when it may be helpful to seek additional support. Most importantly, you’ll gain a more informed and compassionate lens for those puzzling moments when you know your child has the words—but they just aren’t coming.
